Job Description

General Summary of the Position:

Responsibilities include inspecting, troubleshooting, customer service, estimating, and repairing/replacing lift station panel and well components, as well as, servicing other wastewater systems. Electrical and wastewater pumping systems experience is required.

  • Performs duties necessary to support the Maintenance Division in inspecting, installing, maintaining, repairing and/or modifying wastewater facilities and/or systems to include, but not limited to, pumps, motors, engines, electrical equipment, meters, valves, controllers, and other items related to wastewater start/stop stations.
  • Performs duties to plan and implement preventative and routine maintenance schedules. Duties may include the fabrication and/or modification of parts and assemblies, electrical work, and digging or excavating work sites. Responsible for maintaining maintenance and inventory records, and inventory control.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to understand and comprehend technical instructions and manuals.
  • Ability to read, interpret and understand schematics, blueprints and mechanical drawings/renderings.
  • Ability to understand and follow written or verbal instructions and/or directions.
  • Ability to read, write and keep logbooks, inventory records, logbooks, purchase orders, and work requests.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with City employees and officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to work under high demands, short time constraints, and pressure of a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to be on-call and call-out.
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical safety and workplace safety practices and procedures, to include but not limited to, lockout/tagout.
  • Thorough knowledge of mechanics.
  • Thorough knowledge of pumps, valves.                                                                              
  • Thorough knowledge of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems is a plus.          
  • Thorough knowledge of three-phase and single-phase power.
  • Thorough knowledge in the use of a multimeter and ampere meter.

Required Education, Training and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of work-related experience as a Mechanic, Pump and Motor Mechanic or related field is required.
  • Electrical and wastewater pumping systems experience is required.
  • Valid appropriate state driver’s license (general operator license). 
  • Willingness and ability to perform manual work following verbal and written instructions.

Work Environment:

  • Regularly work near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat, and humidity, and exposure to dust, asphalt, water, and sewage.
  • Ability to work in trenches and other confined spaces.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue and to effectively jump, sprint or throw an object.
  • Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.
  • Noise level is generally loud.
