POSITION SUMMARY

Boundaries

The Program Officer has primary responsibility for grantmaking and strategy implementation for the Power Pathway. The Program Officer contributes to the development and manages implementation of pathway strategies and results-based outcomes that advance racial equity and economic inclusion in the San Francisco Bay Area. This includes strengthening grassroots organizing by community and faith-based organizations, leadership development of BIPOC organizers, and promoting integrated voter engagement and political power-building to win governing power. This position will have a particular focus on the leadership development components of our grantmaking and strategy implementation, including coordination of the Women of Color, Women of Power program. 

Authority

Strategy Implementation 

  • Contribute to the development of pathway strategies, identify program outcomes, and manage key components of strategy development and implementation.

  • Develop and implement plans to advance critical elements of SFF’s equity agenda through civic leadership role.

  • Thought leadership and information dissemination. 

  •  Coordination of the Women of Color, Women of Power program 

Collaboration

  • Lead proactive efforts with other funders, private and public sector leaders, and grantees. This could include raising additional funds from other foundations and donors to meet identified needs connected to specific outcomes, as well as convening grantees around an identified programmatic outcome.

  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications staff on media, marketing, and public relations activities. 

Grantmaking 

  • Develop strategy and manage the Power Pathway’s grantmaking portfolio in partnership with the Senior Director of the Power Pathway.

  • Work with grantees on applications/reports, work with grants admin staff to manage grantmaking budget, navigate online systems to process and track grants, develop relationships with community organizations and grantees 

Role 

  • Provide resource and referral advice and technical assistance to grantees and other foundations and/or collaboratives. 

  • Review, research, and recommend grants. Evaluate the solicitation of grants and the response to nonprofit, government, and private agency requests of Foundation funding. This could include the development of RFP’s (Request for Proposals) and/or plans for grant distribution. Evaluate merits of written proposals, conduct due diligence, participate in site visits, review research and present grant recommendations to senior staff and SFF’s Board of Trustees, as appropriate. 

  • Demonstrate content expertise, conduct political landscape research, and provide thought leadership and information dissemination through key speaking engagements, articles, media interviews, and other social media opportunities. Plan and organize convenings and other briefings. 

  • Identify, facilitate, and manage opportunities to bring various constituencies together to further the goals of SFF’s Equity Agenda. For instance, convenings may be used to position SFF (San Francisco Foundation) as a resource for those interested in addressing critical issues affecting individuals and communities, to gather input on a specific strategy or body of work, to garner support for a particular cause or activity, to educate and learn, or for other similar purposes. 

  • Work with partners, donors, grantees, civic and political leaders; provide external leadership for SFF. 

  • In collaboration with the Director of Strategic Learning and Evaluations contribute to the determination of the benchmarks, indicators of success and methodology to track and assess the progress toward outcomes associated with the pathway strategy as well as the effectiveness of grants and progress reports. 

  • In partnership with the Planned Giving and Philanthropy team, the Program Officer will meet with donors and prospective donors as assigned, providing them with information about pathway efforts or other specific issues, best practices and grantmaking opportunities in the Bay Area. Provide background information for direct funding requests to donors. Organize and present at donor forums.

Tasks

  • Determine and refine pathway results and strategies, including grantmaking, convenings, research, and partnerships, all oriented toward advancing regional racial and economic equity. 

  • Ensure a strategic focus on policy and systems change at scale, with emphasis on leadership development for power-building. 

  • Collaborate to make decisions on grantmaking and other investments and to develop alignment and synergy across pathways and the broader department and Foundation to accelerate momentum towards results. 

  • Assist in developing a foundation-wide understanding of and support for pathway and overall equity strategy. 

  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications staff to advance pathway and overarching equity goals. 

  • Seek opportunities to learn from and share new grantmaking and evaluation approaches. 

  • Provide external leadership and develop multi-sector partnerships to advance pathway results and the overarching regional equity agenda.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with funder partners, particularly those connected to the Power Pathway areas of focus and core community and institutional partners. 

  • Create opportunities to collaborate and network among Power Pathway grant partners. 

  • Monitor, maintain knowledge of, and assess emerging equity issues, policies, and practices at the local, regional, state, and national levels -- particularly those connected to the Power Pathway agenda. 

  • Identify themes and trends across our grant portfolio and the nonprofit sector to inform and refine grantmaking strategy and potential partnerships and other opportunities, including fundraising for specific projects and collaborative efforts. 

Competencies & Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent professional experience 

  • Four (4) years of increasingly responsible and experience in the public non-profit and/or philanthropic sector. 

  • Ability to build successful relationships with local leaders and organizations and engage people from diverse backgrounds in many settings.

  • Ability to facilitate meetings, synthesize ideas, and provide sensitive feedback.

  • Knowledge of grantmaking and successfully managing projects to achieve specified goals and outcomes. Ideally the Program Officer will have broad, multi-sector knowledge and /or experience coupled with a strong understanding of Bay Area nonprofit and philanthropic communities. 

  • Proven record of successfully working collaboratively and in teams.

  • Excellent active listening, verbal, and written communications skills. 

  • Understanding of organizational development operations of small and large nonprofits. 

  • Finance and budget experience strongly preferred 

  • Ability to lead collaboratives of multiple funders and leaders, provide cross-sector learning opportunities 

  • Ability to represent the foundation well in public settings, with donors and with philanthropic, private, and public sector stakeholders.

Content Area Knowledge 

  • Racial and economic equity experience is necessary in the fields of community organizing, leadership development, integrated civic engagement, including familiarity with a power-building approach. 

  • Demonstrated deep commitment to and experience working with racial and economic equity principles and practices. 

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in community organizing, movement building, leadership development, and integrated voter engagement in the Bay Area region. 

Technical abilities and skills 

  • Computer literacy in Microsoft environments. 

  • Ability to learn, navigate and manage online grantmaking and budget tools, including Fluxx, Qliksense, Smartsheet and PowerPlan

Compensation : The San Francisco Foundation offers a very competitive total compensation package including base compensation in alignment with our organizational budget size and rich medical and fringe benefits offerings.
