SDPB is a statewide, joint radio and television network, that is also South Dakota's NPR and PBS affiliates. We seek an energetic, organized, and goal-focused professional multi-media journalist to cover daily news and special project assignments with strong social media content, videography, editing, and lighting skills and be able to produce stories and digital media from start to finish. This role will creatively tell stories across our SDPB tv, radio, and online platforms with a focus on digital and emerging media.
This position is a high-profile member of the SDPB journalism team and will lead work on a statewide network for a discerning audience that appreciates and supports good and ethical local story telling.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- shoot and edit video for SDPB public affairs programs and social media channels;
- produce content for news feeds, Stories, vertical video, live streams, lenses, filters and other social video formats;
- builds consensus for production proficiency in social video production in the Journalism content group and across SDPB;
- proactively stay on top of trends/best practices for social video platforms and develop new creative ideas and approaches;
- work closely with the news director and producer of South Dakota Focus; and,
- have sound news judgment and a clear, pleasant delivery.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have: a degree in journalism or media studies and the equivalent of 2-3 years of full-time experience in television production and storytelling preferred. Knowledge of South Dakota, and its newsmakers are a plus. Incumbents must have the ability to develop professional relationships that assist in newsgathering, while remaining objective and professional at all times. The successful candidate can work quickly and efficiently in a fast-paced news situation and provide accurate information to our audience. This candidate must have strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task, have strong writing skills that can adapt between different platforms, and possess video and audio editing skills. Must be able to capture both video and audio media, apply professional techniques to a production, assess lighting needs and set up accordingly, ensure proper shot composition and sequencing, edit work into a complete package to be presented across all platforms. Being able to work independently and with a team is a must.
Knowledge of:
- the latest tools and best practices on emerging social video platforms such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts;
- In-app editing and graphic design skills such as Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and Facebook AR Studio; and,
- social media sites to creatively post content.
Skill to:
- be a creative visual storyteller;
- produce and edit video content for emerging platforms;
- maintain excellent organization; and,
- communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to:
- know a story when you see it;
- edit audio and video to create feature stories;
- learn and adapt as markets and audience behaviors shift;
- consistently produce results under pressure in a fast-paced environment;
- use lighting equipment for video interview;
- operate video camera and production equipment;
- find innovative ways to push boundaries of the format; and,
- travel overnight and across the state.
