Job Description

Community Curator

Our world has changed dramatically in the last two years, and so has Valley Presbyterian Church (VPC). As we seek to be faithful to our mission in this new season, we are committed to extending God's grace by being a space of joy, healing, and connectedness. VPC has a long commitment to community cultivation and spiritual exploration. We are committed to continuing this tradition while expanding the vision and capacity of our congregation to connect more deeply with each other and to experience spiritual transformation and growth.

The Community Curator uses a collaborative approach to further Valley Presbyterian's mission to be a base camp that builds a more loving world. The Community Curator will lead efforts that facilitate and nurture a sense of community within the congregation and throw our doors open wide to support a broader range of partner organizations, families, children, and seekers by offering space, experiences, resources, and community connection points.

Supervision: The Community Curator will be supervised by the Lead Pastor.

Status: This position is 20 hours/week, requiring 30 Sundays in person/year at VPC.

The Community Curator's goals for FY25 are:

  • Oversee and support the implementation of a process for welcome and integration with the volunteer team
  • Re-establish Footprints dinner groups (monthly gatherings of 8 people)
  • Work with the Lead Pastor to establish a congregational spiritual journey during the Sabbatical year around the theme, "Restoration of Soil and Soul."
  • Provide spiritual leadership during the Lead Pastor's sabbatical (late April to early July) and additional compensation during the sabbatical time.
  • Support the 9:30 Hour small group (Sunday) in study topics and occasional leadership.
  • Provide pastoral care that supports our congregation and community members' overall spiritual and emotional growth.
  • Share stories and build connections through online storytelling on the website, blog, and monthly newsletter.

Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Serve on the Executive Team, including the Lead Pastor, Curator of Worship and Arts, Next-Gen Director, and Director of Operations (this includes bi-weekly meetings, quarterly planning, strategy, and vision input).
Outward Focus:

  • Collaborate with other church leaders to develop and curate learning, open-door, and service experiences for the community that further our values of cultivating community, developing soul space, building partnerships for justice and outreach, spiritual exploration and growth, and investing in children and families.
  • Oversee the program's next steps of strategic growth, managing the timeline, budget, branding, systems, and personnel needs for events and initiatives.
  • Develop corresponding content and explore ways to share and amplify that content online using high-quality video, audio, and graphic design.
Congregational Support:

  • Serve as worship host as needed on Sunday mornings.
  • Provide leadership and support for the spiritual formation groups, including the 9:30 Hour volunteer team, seasonal offerings, and ongoing small groups.
  • Serve as a connection point between the congregation and the community beyond. Cultivate relationships and invite people into opportunities that fit their gifts, interests, and expertise.
  • Provide guidance and support to various ministries and groups within the congregation.
  • Offer pastoral guidance and resources for life events such as weddings, baptisms, and dedications.
  • Stay informed about current trends and best practices in pastoral care and spiritual development.
Experience: At least 3 years working in community development and/or spiritual formation in a congregational setting. Masters in theology or spirituality are not required but preferred.

Please email an updated resume and cover letter to chyrise@valleypreschurch.org

Compensation: $35.00 - $50.00 per hour

Our Beliefs

WHOLEHEARTED AND SPACIOUS FAITH

At Valley Presbyterian, you will meet people at many different places theologically and spiritually. And we love it that way. We want to be a place where our diversity brings us together and where conversation takes us all deeper in our understanding of God. We don't ask anyone to sign creeds or statements of belief. Our life of faith is a way of being in the world, a faith that shows itself in love.

Our faith is a way of wisdom and practice in the footsteps of Jesus of Nazareth. This path is a commitment to the complexity of community, to the paradox of both/and, to transformation of soul, mind and body, and to the flourishing of a just and whole earth. The Jewish and Christian Scriptures are our sacred guide along centuries-old paths that lead us into the universal love of God. Our faith invites us to tell our stories and welcomes questions. We delight in a Mystery that draws us into a future that offers us more than we can ask or imagine as we live a wholehearted and spacious faith.

Our Core Values

WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO US

Slowing down, we ask questions and experience the mystery of faith.

Seeking the sacred through creativity, playfulness and nature, we nurture our faith.

Dropping our masks, we invite each other to be our true selves.

Focusing outward, we build partnerships, create opportunities, seek justice and learn from each other.

Like the Redwoods, supporting one another through the seasons of life, we become rooted in a trusting, loving community.

Our Vision

BEING TOUCHED BY OUR CHURCH MEANS

Deepen the understanding and connection to God.

Have healthier and more loving relationships with spouses, children, family, friends, co-workers.

Experience a deeper sense of connectedness throughout a vibrant cross-generational VPC community.

Take more action to serve others.

Have a greater awareness of and compassion for the suffering of others in their family, the church, the community and the world beyond.

Careers

At Valley Presbyterian Church, we value a wholehearted and spacious faith. For us, that means nurturing a culture of people who care-about you, about our congregation, and about our communities. We want to be a place where our diversity brings us together and conversation takes us deeper. Our size, picturesque location and supportive culture make this a reality.
