Job Description
The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh’s (URA) Communications Specialist I is a vital role within the organization that will support the daily operations of the Communications Department. The candidate will be responsible for implementing communications strategies and projects that raise awareness of the URA’s economic development goals, services, and impact. An ideal candidate will be reliable, detail-oriented, self-driven, innovative, and willing to work collaboratively.

Essential Functions and Responsibilitie s:
- Assist Communications Department with preparing, writing, editing, designing, and formatting content for internal and external communications channels as needed, including but not limited to website, social media, press releases, email campaigns, newsletters, flyers, brochures, reports, and presentations
- Proofread and copy edit external communications materials, including press releases, board meeting agendas, reports, presentations, and time sensitive announcements
- Conduct interviews, write, and compile stories, features, and news for the URA website, social media, and reports
- Attend groundbreakings, ribbon cuttings, and other relevant community events
- Photograph clients, projects, events, staff, and other relevant subjects
- Work with team to enhance storytelling opportunities for the organization
- Update and maintain website
- Help implement brand strategy
- Compile information, narratives, and photos for quarterly and annual reports
- Assist in project management for the department, including tracking the status of projects and tasks, incoming department requests, and email correspondence. Acknowledge emails upon receipt in coordination with team.
- Work with staff across departments to support all functions of the Communications Department as directed
- Assist in internal communications, including but not limited to, organizing and attending internal meetings, distributing notes, following up on ongoing projects and marketing efforts, actively seeking process improvement strategies, and updating the department SharePoint with relevant organization wide materials and resources
- Assist in monthly Board Meeting preparation and logistics
- Monitor press coverage and update department bulletin board and SharePoint with relevant organization news
- Assist with email marketing efforts, including creating, formatting, editing, and scheduling Mailchimp campaigns
- Assist in social media strategy and day-to-day management, including brainstorming content, writing copy, designing or locating visuals, scheduling posts and campaigns, monitoring success, and updating weekly calendar covering relevant activity and news
- Monitor social media channels daily for engagement and customer service needs
- Research marketing trends and best practices relevant to the URA and its affiliates
- Collaborate with staff on new ideas and directions for marketing/communications and positive brand reputation
- Assist with preparation for press events, in coordination with the Mayor’s Office
- Assist in department financial data entry and tracking
- Perform other duties as assigned
Position Requirements and Qualificatio ns:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, photojournalism, multimedia, public relations, advertising, English, or a related field
- 1-3 years of experience is preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to communicate in a professional manner with stakeholders
- Exceptional proofreading skills
- Familiarity with AP style
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, and Excel)
- Proficiency in the use of social media platforms and suites
- Graphic design skills and familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud software (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.)
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize and multitask
- Must be able to meet deadlines and complete projects
- Basic photography skills
- Local travel (within City of Pittsburgh boundaries) required as part of job duties
- Requested to provide the following samples as part of application process to this position: 1 writing sample, 1 design sample, and 1 social media post or campaign sample
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience using social media for government, business, or nonprofit
- Experience with Mailchimp, Hootsuite, JotForm, and Basecamp a plus
- Video production and editing skills a plus
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs., standing, sitting, reaching and stretching.
- Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone.
