**Description:**
The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the BLM, is recruiting two (2) Archaeology Crew Members to help address key management tasks related to multiple projects within the Eagle Lake Field Office in Susanville, California. Through this opportunity, the successful applicant will be exposed to the operations of a federal land management agency charged with a multiple-use and sustainable-yield mission. The Crew Member will gain a greater understanding of how policy decisions are formulated, gain hands-on experience with cultural resource monitoring protocols and field techniques, enhance skills related to data collection, organization, and management, as well as actively participate in formal trainings.
The successful candidates will be familiar with standard methods for archaeological field work, using Avenza and Collector programs to collect field data, and conducting background research prior to field work. The Crew Member will be trained to identify and record local cultural resources. Project scheduled for the 2022 field season include archaeological surveys for spring development projects, range related projects, OHV trail development projects, and site monitoring at project sites and known recorded archaeological sites.
This opportunity provides experience working with federal archaeologists and alongside a variety of BLM staff. Crew Members will encounter diverse archaeological resources in a Great Basin context, which will expand their experience in cultural resource management. Most work is performed in an outdoor environment that ranges from cold and wet to hot, smokey, and dry. This work may require physical exertion over steep, wet, muddy, slippery, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; and may include bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and similar activities. Overnight camping for several days at a time in remote areas may occasionally be required.

* 25.5-week appointment beginning in mid-May to early-June through mid-November to early-December

**Location:**
The BLM Eagle Lake Field Office is located in Susanville, California, in the vicinity of many outdoor recreation opportunities, including fishing, mountain biking, hiking/backpacking, kayaking, frisbee golf, and skiing/snowboarding. Susanville is located in northeastern California, with access to nearby national forests and the Sierra Nevada range to the south and Reno, NV 90 miles to the southeast.
**Compensation and Benefits:**
* Total Living Allowance: **$12,600** (Approximately $1,000 biweekly before taxes)
* Segal AmeriCorps Education Award: **$3,172.50** (Upon successful completion, the award may be used for past, present or future educational expenses, including payment of qualifying federal student loans and Title IV accredited college tuition.)
* Qualifying federal students may qualify for forbearance and repayment of accrued interest
* Housing Stipend: **$75/week**
* Medical, dental, and vision insurance available at no cost
**Qualifications:**
Technical requirements:
* Bachelors degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related discipline, and relevant field experience;
* Knowledge of historic and/or prehistoric cultural resources of northern California;
* Ability to understand, implement and adhere to established data collection, inventory and monitoring protocols;
* Experience in performing archaeological surveys, inventories and assessments;
* Capacity to collect and maintain field data in an organized manner that is easily understood and accessible to other staff (GBI or BLM);
* Familiarity with completing site forms (or portions of site forms) and/or entering site form data into database programs;
* Ability to utilize ArcGIS software to build maps, organize and manage data, and manipulate data layers;
* Experience operating hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and electronic field data collection; experience post-processing field is beneficial; and
* Ability to read and interpret topographic maps and navigate using a compass.
Additional requirements:
* Possess a valid, state-issued drivers license and clean driving record;
* Ability to safely drive a 4WD vehicle on unpaved roads that can be steep and rutted;
* Possess good organizational skills and be detail oriented;
* Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 40 pounds in a backpack, and otherwise maintain good physical condition;
* Ability to work productively and cooperatively as part of a team focused on accomplishing mutual goals and communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience;
* Familiarity with backcountry, low-impact principles preferred; and
* Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time education awards), (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) and federal criminal background checks, (4) adhere to the rules, regulations and code of conduct as specified in the Member Service Agreement; and (5) not engage in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.
